A virtuoso, Nelson Freire.

Nelson Freire, Brazilian pianist.

The story of a pianist prodigy rising from humble beginnings to international acclaim is nothing new, but even by child prodigy standards, the pianist Nelson Freire's abilities were surprising.

Born on October 18th, 1944 in a small town in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais called Boa Esperança, Freire amazed everyone around him by replaying from memory pieces his elder sister had just performed when he was 3 years old. Giving his first public performance when he was only four. At the age of 5, Freire chose Mozart's Sonata in A major, K. 331 for his first public recital.

Later he took lessons with the Rio-based pianist Nise Obino with whom he would form a close relationship, and with Lucia Branco, a former student of one of Liszt's pupils. He quickly proved himself as a virtuoso, absorbing new repertoire at tremendous pace.
