What's something Brazilians absolutely love, but they can't find in Brazil.

This was a fair question from a friend who was going to visit Brazil. " What they absolutely love?"

Here is my answer.

Chocolates! It’s hard to find a Brazilian who doesn’t have a sweet tooth, or doesn’t like chocolates. I recommend you buy any recognized brand of chocolate in its new flavor, or shape. You can buy the special edition of some brand they know, like a 4th the July, or Halloween edition Kit Kat bite size.

For example, last year I brought all types of the M&Ms bars for each one in my family to choose by color. They have M&Ms there, but not these! So it was a success.

10 important, but often ignored facts about Brazil

  1. Brazil has the 2nd largest number of airports in the world (4093).
  2. Brazil is still the country with the largest number of Catholics in the world.
  3. Brazil is the 2nd country with the highest plastic surgery rate.
  4. More than 1,000 languages were spoken in Brazil before the discovery. Today, only 180 still survive and only 11 are spoken by more than 5,000 people.
  5. Brazil imported 4.8 million slaves from Africa, almost half of all slaves throughout the Americas.
  6. Brazil has the fastest growing fleet of helicopters in the world. Sao Paulo boasts the world’s largest private helicopter fleet with more than 400 helicopters making 1,500 take-offs and landings a day.
  7. There was no bloodshed during the Proclamation of the Republic, on 15 November 1889.
  8. The Brazilian flag flown in the Square of the Three Powers in Brasilia is the largest flag flown in the world.
  9. The oldest tree in Brazil is a jequitibá-rosa with 3020 years that is in Vassununga State Park in Santa Rita do Passa Quatro - SP.
  10. And… We speak Portuguese, from Brazil which is not the same as the one spoken in Portugal; not Spanish; not Brazilian.

How to avoid pests in your home

Free photo 116611687 © Publicdomainphotos - Dreamstime.com

1. Spray spider webs and wasp nests around your home and remove when clear and safe.

2. Seal up any cracks, holes, or gaps around windows, doors, walls, or foundations.

3. Relocate trash outside as soon as possible.

4. For inside your home, use a garbage container with a lid to prevent pest and rodents from getting in the trash. Make sure take out the trash frequently and always keep the lid to outside receptacle closed.

5. Store dry goods like flour and sugar in airtight containers. For more frequently used items like cereal or pasta, store containers that are fully resealable.

6. Use insect and pest control products on your lawn and around the perimeter of your home.

7. Tip and turn over anything in your yard that can hold water to reduce mosquitoes. This includes toys, plants saucers and dog bowls.

8. Trim any tree branches or shrubbery growing close to your home and keep a 3- to 6- inches clearance. This reduce easy access for pest to enter your home.

9. Store fire wood in a dry and breezy area. Make sure your stack is at least 10 feet away from your home and elevated 6- plus inches off the ground.

Real Food Daily restaurant in California

Real Food Daily it's a charming restaurant in California. It was there I've also decided to try my new approach for eating safely.

After searching the menu without feeling confident about their mixing greens and vegetables, I asked them to make a salad with my choice of ingredients. They are the ones I know I can eat without reactions.

Here is the happy end of another story of eating out without allergic reactions.
Here is my list based on their menu.

The salads and starters menu.

The charm.

Two cities, two Brazilian restaurants one great food!

Tucanos in Greenville at Magnolia Park, and Amor de Brazil in Charlotte at 74 and 51 intersection.

Let's review our findings from last couple weekends.

Two cities - Greenville vs. Charlotte

Two Brazilian restaurants - Tucanos vs. Amor de Brazil

Starting with cities, Charlotte has more things to do, but Greenville is much more charming. You may like to read more about it in here, although Tucanos restaurant isn't at downtown.

Tucanos is roomy, but they are not yet working in a full capacity. Amores is smaller, but has plenty room for you and your friends.

Talking about music, both have a variety of Brazilian music playing, not that I care for the style they choose on these places.

Directly to the subject, both names are very Brazilian. Amor de Brazil means love from Brazil, and Tucanos are those birds with the long colorful beaks.

Both places are steakhouses and they serve grilled meat or, as we say in Brazil, churrasco in a traditional Brazilian way which means those chucky pieces of meat keep passing by each table with a green signal on. You will only understand if you have being to one of those before.

A tucano at Tucanos' façade and the red/green flag for more or less meat.

BTW, both have the very traditional sign you use to "say" either YES, Sir. I want some more! or NO, I'm full as ballons on the Macy's parade.

Both can accommodate gluten free folks, just ask them about the sauces on the meat. They also can accommodate vegetarians, in case you need to follow your family or friends. In this case, I highly recommend you try the grilled pineapple. Yummy

Both have a salad buffet as complimentary to the meat walking around the empty plates.

Both have other Brazilian dishes as white rice and black beans. Tucanos had also some sushi rolls - what? Yes, we have this is Brazil too.

Both have cheese rolls or cheese bread - pão de queijo as we say in Brazil.

Both have the most famous soda you'll find in Brazil, Guaraná Antártica.

Palm hearts at Amor and rare meat at Tucanos.

Both have chicken hearts - sorry Americans, we do eat offal over there. Although in Amor de Brazil we had to ask for it, but they were glad to prepare just for us.

Both have quail eggs on the salad bar - yes, we do eat those too.

I didn't see palm hearts at Tucanos, but maybe I was distracted by the top sirloin - picanha.

Talking about picanha, hubby sad it was softer in Amor de Brazil, but both were great in my opinion. Just in case you wonder, neither place has a big fat cover on the top sirloin as we see in Brazil.

Let's talk more about drinks, Amor only has can juices, but Tucanos has fresh ones. Just like you used to drink in Brazil.

Desserts, Tucanos don't had brigadeiro, but had papaya flan with cassis liquor. Amor had some good sweets as well, although I didn't care for any at that time.

Let's go to numbers, Amor de Brazil cost $35 per person and Tucanos $23. Because Tucanos is near home, it's the winner of the day!

Now it's your time to make your opinion known. Have you being to any Brazilian steakhouse?

Corn in a Publix walnut, how is it possible?

Clearwater beach at Tampa Bay.

Spring is around the corner and I've decided to go see Tampa bay before a longer trip to Florida. It was good, but my issues with food were there as well.

As always, I read the label before eating anything. Mainly in a trip. Even if I'm traveling for work. Why? I don't want to get any reaction that will make me miss a flight for example. Back to the point I was talking, a great light come to my mind about previous reactions eating nuts in many salads.

Why walnuts need corn oil? Freshness and allergy.
I'm pretty and dangerous.

Too bad for me!

But at least, now I know why I reacted.

It was all white on the eggs' shelves, wait, look again...

How about taking fashion to a next level? Iodine bindi for Indians.

Life Saving Dot is the right name for it is the most fashion recognizable Indian accessorie. An iodine bindi came to fill a gap between the women in India and a healthy body. Watch this video to understand this great idea.

These things only exist in Brazil, but they have international names.

Curious and fun facts about Brazil

Brazil is very unique about food, and I'm not talking about those food that you only can find in Brazil soil. Let's see some examples.

French bread
French bread (pão francês) is a staple breakfast food.

During the 19 century the Brazilian bread used to be made from a whole wheat, which means it's a dark bread. After the First World War many Brazilians come back home asking the bakers to prepare a bread with a white interior, but a golden exterior. This is called French bread in Brazil, but no one in France will know what you are talking about if you try to buy it there.

Greek rice

Greek rice (arroz à grega) gives rice a potpourri of color.

No one knows who invented this name, or where it was used for the first time in Brazil. Fact is, Brazilians will call this colorful rice as Greek rice for no reason.

Chinese pastry

Chinese pastry (pastel chinês) is another Brazilian creation.

A few hypotheses for a delicious dish that you will never find in China. The two best explanations are: 1. this was created from a fried gyoza, or 2. a Brazilian cooker was trying to make a fancy Chinese spring roll. Anyway, this still yummy.

Nederland pie

Nederland pie (torta holandesa) was also invented in Brazil.

A baker missing the years she used to live in Europe created this sweet pie in Campinas, near to Sao Paulo city. It's a surprising mix of creamed milk, chocolate and cookie served cold.

Want to see another food that only exists in Brazil? The trunk grape which last one day only, the jaboticaba

It was all white on the eggs' shelves, wait, look again...

It's all white on the eggs' shelf world until a great idea came! What idea? Look again.

They are pasture-raised hens, living on 108 sq ft minimum per bird. Seriously? I'm from a country where many people are used to live in small houses, much smaller than these 10 square meters that those chickens have there. Also they are tended by hand and raised with respect. Ok, now I will keep my mouth shut now. lol

Now, you'll find those human raised eggs at Walmart too!

"We believe that everyone should have access to humanely raised foods. We’re pleased to announce that our Alfresco Eggs are now available at Walmart! Just Texas and Louisiana for now - but plan on growing steadily! Remember, a higher demand for ethical eggs = more farmers and flocks to add to the Vital Crew." From it's fanpage.

Buying local, helping the family of farmers.

Earlybird Worm Farm, Produce for sell, 6902 US-25, Hodges, SC, 29653.

Coming back from a meeting I usually see this local farm where a family is working day by day to have organic products for their meals. This time I decide to stop and take a closer look to the southern greens. Enjoy some pics from their small farm. BTW the address is above.

Squashes, southern peppers, and onions but only if you honk!
Eggs, the old man said his chickens aren't working during these hot summer days.
I bet, it's 100 today!

These were my preferences.
Fresh okra!

Saturday Market on Greenville downtown, yeah that Greenville.

There's always something cool going on downtown Greenville. Since two months ago, the most finest fresh and locally grown produce has being sold on Main Street. Check my pics from last Saturday to inspire you.

On Main, the Saturday Market ends on E. Court Street.

If you don't feel like cooking, I suggest you go directly to the food truck, enjoy the music, and go buy other types of products. I guarantee you'll find a great variety of local gems.

Food trucks, music and special yarns.

Bastille Days in the Southern US, a celebration.

Happy Bastille Days

Greenville is a unique Southern city with a great variety of cultures. The French culture is part of it, and this weekend we celebrate the Bastille Days in the city with many events.

Besides the 100 Fahrenheit temperature that only who lives in the South knows it, my pics from everything that I saw was the lady selling lavender products as the small plant for you to grow at home.

Types of lavender that you can grow in the South.
A few healing effects of lavender are:

1. Polyphenols in lavender reduces poor digestion caused by bad bacteria.

2. It also lowers your blood pressure, making you relax easily.

3. Use a few dried flowers at night to help with insomnia.

4. It's used as anti-inflammatory for mosquitoes bites reducing itching, swelling, and redness.

5. Antiseptic properties for minor burns.

6.  Lavender oil helps with flakes!

7. Switch your smelly car for a Lavender vehicle.

8. Need more? Make luxurious floral arrangements.

Lavender for cooking is different from the ornamental one.
